If you like to travel, there is one inconvenient thing that could happen to you – getting bumped off. Airlines oftentimes find themselves overbooked and to cope with this situation, they simply bump off the other passengers. Of course, the airlines are aware of their obligation and usually offer the bumped passengers compensation.

In cases of overbooking, you can react in two ways: take advantage of the compensation or create a scene. Creating a scene will not do you any good so instead of getting angry, you should keep your cool.

For starters, you can always volunteer to be bumped especially if you are not really in a hurry. But before you do this, ask the airline if they will help you confirm a seat on the next available flight and what kind of compensation you will be enjoying. In most instances, bumped off passengers are given free meals, airport to hotel transport and hotel rooms.

If you were unfortunate enough to get bumped, you should ask the airline about your rights. Usually, travelers are paid at once but if you are able to reach your destination within one hour of the expected time of arrival, then you are not entitled to any compensation. On the other hand, if you reach your destination within 2-4 hours, depending on the location, you can receive compensation equivalent to a one-way fare, not exceeding $200.

Keep in mind that you are only entitled to any form of compensation due to getting bumped if you confirmed your reservation, bought the ticket in time and checked in on schedule. If you were not able to meet one of these requirements, you will lose your right to receive any compensation if the airline over booked and bumped you off from the flight.
