Keyword tips and tricks

Building a keyword list is a time-consuming process, but without finding “profitable” keywords for your business you won’t be able to be successful online. There are many keyword tools available on the market today, but to be honest I prefer using Google Keywords tool. It’s free, it’s accurate and easy to use. The other great keywords tools are wordtracker and keyworddiscovery tools.

Your very first step to build a list of keywords is to write down all of the products and services you will be promoting on your site or a blog. Next, use a keywords tool to expand your list. Finally, add negative, misspelled and “geo” keywords to your list.

Negative keywords

what is the negative keyword? It’s a word that will prevent your ad from being displayed. If you like me and using Google Keywords Tool, then adding negative keywords to your list is easy as 1-2-3. Change the data to display “Possible negative keywords” and add these words as you would add regular keywords to your list.

Misspellings and typos

Don’t forget to include misspelled keywords into your keywords list. Lots of searches have misspelled words and they are considerably less competitive in most cases.

Think of how a word is pronounced and think of all the different ways it could be spelled of misspelled. Here is a great example: the new search engine - www.cuil.com. It is the misspelled version of “cool”. Or another example: “kwik”.

Also, check keywords that can be separated. Example: ebook or e-book

Use plural and singular variations. Google does distinguish between plural and singular keywords, and it’s a good idea to consider adding both plural and singular versions of keywords.

Add “geo” keywords to your list. People very often add a location to their keywords, for example: Maryland consulting.
